Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Lepidocolaptes, but recent molecular studies indicate that it is better placed in present genus, as suggested also by both behavioural observations and morphological characters. Molecular data suggest that it is apparently sister to a combined Elegant Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus elegans)/Spix's Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus spixii) and Chestnut-rumped Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus pardalotus)/Ocellated Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus ocellatus) clade.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
atlanticus (Vieillot, 1818) - North-eastern Brazil from Ceará and Paraíba south to Alagoas. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Atlantic Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus atlanticus).
brevirostris (Pinto, 1938) - Arid interior of north-eastern Brazil (western Bahia). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Tschudi's Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus chunchotambo). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Ocellated Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus ocellatus).
tenuirostris (Lichtenstein, MHK, 1820) - Coastal eastern Brazil from central Bahia south to R Doce (Espírito Santo).
fuscus (Vieillot, 1818) - South-eastern Brazil from southern Goiás, eastern Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo (R Doce) south to north-eastern and central Rio Grande do Sul, also southern and south-eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
pintoi Longmore & Silveira, 2005 - Arid north-eastern Brazil in western Bahia.
