Subspecies
Close relationship to Campylorhamphus proposed in one study. Subspecies devillei considered possibly a separate species by some authors, but vocalizations like those of other subspecies.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
devillei (Lafresnaye, 1850) - Western Amazonia from central Colombia, eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru east to western Brazil (east to R Madeira, probably also to R Negro) and south to northern Bolivia.
rufigula (Lesson, 1844) - North-eastern Amazonia, northern bank of Amazon, in eastern Venezuela (north-eastern Bolívar, southern Delta Amacuro), the Guianas and northern Brazil (northern Roraima, and R Negro east to Amapá).
moniliger Zimmer, JT, 1934 - Amazonian Brazil south of Amazon (from R Madeira east to lower R Tocantins, south to Mato Grosso).
paraensis Lorenz von Liburnau, L, 1895 - Amazonian Brazil south of Amazon (east of R Tocantins in eastern Pará).
