Subspecies
Possibly closest to "typica group" of Northern Long-tailed Woodcreeper (Deconychura longicauda), size and vocalizations of which more similar to present species than to Amazonian Northern Long-tailed Woodcreeper (Deconychura longicauda). Subspecies secunda has been considered a separate species by some authors. Racial identity of birds from extreme east of range in Brazil (east of R Tocantins, to Maranhío) not known and tentatively included within nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • secundus Hellmayr, 1904   -  Western Amazonia from southern Colombia and southern Venezuela (southern Amazonas) south to eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru and north-western Brazil (east to R Negro and R Madeira).
  • clarior (Zimmer, JT, 1929)   -  North-eastern Amazonia, north of Amazon, in Brazil from R Negro east to Amapá, and French Guiana; populations in Guyana presumably this subspecies.
  • stictolaemus (Pelzeln, 1868)   -  Southern Amazonian Brazil, south of Amazon, from R Madeira east to lower R Tocantins and Maranhío, and south to northern Mato Grosso.
