Subspecies
Has been suggested as being sister-species of Tawny-winged Woodcreeper (Dendrocincla anabatina). Purported subspecies macrorhyncha, described on basis of two specimens from eastern slope in northern Ecuador and sometimes treated as a separate species, appears to involve aberrant individuals (larger, longer-billed, lighter and more olivaceous plumage, pale throat more conspicuous) of nominate subspecies. Subspecies hellmayri only marginally distinct. Described subspecies brunnea (western Ecuador) considered inseparable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
tyrannina (Lafresnaye, 1851) - Western and central Andes from central Colombia (Antioquia) southern on both slopes to central Peru.
hellmayri Cory, 1913 - Eastern slope of eastern Andes in north-eastern Colombia (Norte de Santander, Boyacá) and adjacent western Venezuela (western Táchira).
