Subspecies
Geographical variation over species' large range slight, despite number of named subspecies. There seems to be more variation within nominate than among many of proposed subspecies. Highly likely that many or most subspecies are not diagnosable. The majority were described from few specimens and few localities, and many of the characters used to define them seem invalid. Racial identity of birds from extreme eastern Peru and north-eastern Bolivia (Pando) and others from extreme eastern and south-east of latter country uncertain and the first are tentatively included with purusianus and the second with connectens. Listed distributions of several subspecies should be interpreted with caution.
The following 11 subspecies are recognised:
septentrionalis Zimmer, JT, 1929 - Costa Rica and western Panama (western Chiriquí).
incomptus Wetmore, 1970 - Extreme eastern Panama (Cerro Pirre).
phelpsi Meyer de Schauensee, 1959 - Santa Marta Mts, in northern Colombia.

guayae Hellmayr, 1920 - Lowlands of western Ecuador (southern from Esmeraldas) and north-western Peru (Tumbes, Piura).
