Subspecies
Genus has sometimes been merged into a broadly defined Philydor. No obvious close relatives. Superficial plumage similarities may suggest relationship to Pseudocolaptes, Heliobletus, Syndactyla or Hyloctistes, and foraging behaviour perhaps most similar to that of first of those. Species name regularly misspelled as "leucophrys".
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
leucophrus (Jardine & Selby, 1830) - South-eastern Brazil (southern Bahia south to Rio de Janeiro).
holti Pinto, 1941 - South-eastern Brazil (Sío Paulo south to north-eastern Santa Catarina and north-eastern Rio Grande do Sul). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Small Pale-browed Treehunter (Cichlocolaptes holti).
