Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Creamy-breasted Canastero (Asthenes dorbignyi). In some aspects of plumage, tail structure, behaviour, voice and nest structure, all are more similar to Phacellodomus (especially Streak-fronted Thornbird (Phacellodomus striaticeps)) and possibly better placed in that genus. Some, however, have predicted a closer relationship to Dusky-tailed Canastero (Pseudasthenes humicola). Subspecies neiffi of Short-billed Canastero (Asthenes baeri) originally described as a subspecies of present species.
Similar Species
