Subspecies
Has been considered by some authors to be part of a superspecies formed by Crested Spinetail (Cranioleuca subcristata), Stripe-crowned Spinetail (Cranioleuca pyrrhophia), Bolivian Spinetail (Cranioleuca henricae), Olive Spinetail (Cranioleuca obsoleta), Pallid Spinetail (Cranioleuca pallida), Line-cheeked Spinetail (Cranioleuca antisiensis) and Baron's Spinetail (Cranioleuca baroni), but genetic data suggest that at least the last two of those are not part of this lineage. Voice and biogeography suggest to some that it is most closely related to Baron's Spinetail (Cranioleuca baroni), but genetic data are ambiguous. Subspecies albigula evidently intergrades with nominate in Ayacucho and Apurímac.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • albicapilla (Cabanis, 1873)   -  Andes of central Peru (Junín and Huancavelica south to Ayacucho and Apurímac).
  • albigula Zimmer, JT, 1924   -  Andes of southern Peru (Cuzco south to Ayacucho and Apurímac).
