Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Light-crowned Spinetail (Cranioleuca albiceps); traditional sister relationship is supported by genetic data.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
weskei Remsen, 1984 - Vilcabamba Mts, in south-eastern Peru (Cuzco). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Vilcabamba Spinetail (Cranioleuca weskei).
marcapatae Zimmer, 1935 - Vilcanota and Carabaya ranges (Cuzco).
