Subspecies
In the past, was sometimes placed in a monotypic genus Chinchipe or in Siptornopsis. More similar to latter or to Cranioleuca in foraging behavior, voice and nest structure. On the other hand, one genetic study based on protein electrophoresis found this species to cluster with present genus rather than with Cranioleuca. Further research needed. Subspecies chinchipensis treated as a separate species by some authors, but published evidence for this is weak.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
stictothorax Sclater, 1859 - South-western Ecuador (central Manabí south to western Guayas and Puna I).
maculata Lawrence, 1872 - Extreme south-western Ecuador (southern Loja) and north-western Peru (Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad).
chinchipensis Chapman, 1925 - North-western Peru (Marañón Valley in Cajamarca). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chinchipe Spinetail (Synallaxis chinchipensis).
