Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Slaty Spinetail (Synallaxis brachyura) and perhaps Blackish-headed Spinetail (Synallaxis tithys). Abruptly replaced by Slaty Spinetail (Synallaxis brachyura)in northern Honduras, and their nests are remarkably similar. Some tendency for northern birds of nominate subspecies to have darker and more uniform central belly, but extensive overlap with others farther south.
Proposed subspecies furtiva, described from Caribbean lowlands of Mexico, is not diagnosable.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
erythrothorax Sclater, 1855 - Caribbean slope from south-eastern Mexico (southern Veracruz and Yucatán Peninsula south to northern Oaxaca and Tabasco) south to Guatemala, Belize and north-western Honduras.
pacifica Griscom, 1930 - Pacific lowlands of south-western Mexico (southern Chiapas), Guatemala and El Salvador.
furtiva Bangs & Peters, JL, 1927 - Lowlands of south-eastern Mexico (Veracruz, Oaxaca and Tabasco).
