Subspecies
Almost certainly the sister-species of Chestnut-throated Spinetail (Synallaxis cherriei), type specimen of which was once considered an aberrant individual of subspecies amazonica of present species. Distinctive subspecies omissa suggested as being possibly a separate species. Differentiation and distribution of other subspecies uncertain, and present arrangement tentative. Some listed subspecies possibly not distinguishable, while small series of specimens from northern Bolivia suggests that darkness of plumage coloration varies clinally from western Amazonia to extreme eastern Bolivia (near type locality of tertia). A thorough analysis is needed.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
dissors Zimmer, JT, 1935 - Eastern Colombia (Vichada, Guainía), southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar), the Guianas and northern Brazil (east of R Negro).
caquetensis Chapman, 1914 - South-eastern Colombia (southern from Meta and Vaupés), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru.
confinis Zimmer, JT, 1935 - North-western Brazil (west of R Negro).
amazonica Hellmayr, 1907 - Eastern Peru, western and central Brazil (south of R Amazon, east to R Tapajós) and northern Bolivia (Pando, La Paz, northern Beni).
rutilans Temminck, 1823 - East-central Brazil from R Tapajós east to R Tocantins, south to north-eastern Mato Grosso.
omissa Hartert, 1901 - R Tocantins east to northern Maranhío (eastern Brazil).
tertia Hellmayr, 1907 - South-western Brazil (south to south-western Mato Grosso) and eastern Bolivia (eastern Santa Cruz).
