Subspecies
Close relationship to Pale-breasted Spinetail (Synallaxis albescens) and Spix's Spinetail (Synallaxis spixi) suggested by plumage and vocal similarities. Considered by some authors to be possibly the sister-species of former, and was once regarded as conspecific.
Proposed subspecies pullata of that species is a synonym of nominate subspecies of present species. Larger birds with much darker underparts, found in Huallaga and Ucayali drainages of Peru, appear to represent an undescribed subspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
rodolphei Bond, J, 1956 - Southern Colombia (Meta south to Putumayo) and north-eastern Ecuador (Sucumbíos, northern Napo).
albigularis Sclater, 1858 - Eastern Ecuador (southern from southern Napo), south-eastern Colombia (extreme southern Amazonas), eastern Peru (Amazonas south to Madre de Dios) and western Brazil (E, mainly along R Amazon, to R Negro).
