Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland. From 2,600 - 4,500 m, occasionally up to 2,500 m.
Andes of Bolivia (La Paz south to Potosí), extreme north-eastern Chile (western Antofagasta) and north-western Argentina (Jujuy, Salta, northern Catamarca).

Subspecies
Considered by some to form a superspecies withStriated Earthcreeper (Geocerthia serrana), but plumage features suggest possible closer relationship to Straight-billed Earthcreeper (Ochetorhynchus ruficaudus).
