Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland. Also, subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland. From 3,200 - 4,600 m.
Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru.
Altiplano region of Andes of extreme southern Peru (Puno), western Bolivia (La Paz south to Potosí), north-western Chile (Tarapacá south to Atacama) and north-western Argentina (Jujuy south to Catamarca).

Plumage similarities suggest that closest relationship is with Dark-winged Miner (Geositta saxicolina ) and Rufous-banded Miner (Geositta rufipennis ).
