Subspecies
Some plumage similarities, small size and biogeography have suggested to some authors that it is most closely related to Greyish Miner (Geositta maritima), although fundamental differences in wing and tail patterns may indicate otherwise. Has been considered to form a superspecies with Common Miner (Geositta cunicularia), but this thought unlikely.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
paytae Ménégaux & Hellmayr, 1906 - North-western Peru (Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash).
peruviana Lafresnaye, 1847 - Western Peru (Lima).
rostrata Stolzmann, 1926 - South-western Peru (Ica).
