Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Thought by some authors to be a sister-species to the "Jet Antbird (Cercomacra nigricans) species group", or intermediate between the two major Cercomacra species groups. Populations fall into two pairs; nominate subspecies and immaculata may prove to be a different species from sclateri and iterata, but differences between subspecies within each pair (especially first of those) may be clinal.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
cinerascens (Sclater, 1857) - Southern Venezuela (western and southern Bolívar, Amazonas), south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru (north of R Amazon and R Marañón) and north-western Amazonian Brazil (northern Amazonas, Roraima, northern Pará west of R Nhamunda).
immaculata Chubb, C, 1918 - Eastern Venezuela (eastern Bolívar), the Guianas and north-eastern Amazonian Brazil (Amapá, northern Pará east of R Nhamunda).
sclateri Hellmayr, 1905 - Eastern Peru (mainly south of R Amazon and R Marañón but also occurs north of latter), south-western Amazonian Brazil (south of R Amazon, east to R Madeira) and north-western Bolivia (Pando, La Paz, Beni).
iterata Zimmer, JT, 1932 - South-eastern Amazonian Brazil (east of R Madeira to western Maranhío, south to Rondônia, western Mato Grosso and southern Pará) and north-eastern Bolivia (northern Santa Cruz).
