Subspecies
Closely related to Chestnut-shouldered Antwren (Euchrepomis humeralis) and Yellow-rumped Antwren (Euchrepomis sharpei). Includes "Hylophilus puella", original description of which was based on a female of present species. Subspecies exhibit minimal differences in plumage, but appear to be isolated geographically from one another. Subspecies venezuelana has sometimes been treated as a separate species. Recent records in Mérida and Barinas (western Venezuela) presumed to relate to latter subspecies. Further study is required.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
callinota (Sclater, 1855) - Costa Rica (Caribbean slope southern from southern Alajuela), Panama (Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, Veraguas, eastern Darién), Colombia (locally from Valle del Cauca and Cundinamarca south to Nariño and western Caquetá), Ecuador (both slopes, on Pacific south to El Oro) and northern Peru (Piura, Cajamarca, Amazonas).
venezuelana (Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1954) - North-western Venezuela in Sierra de Perijá; also, recent sight records in Mérida and Barinas.
guianensis (Blake, 1949) - Southern Guyana and central Surinam.
peruviana (Meyer de Schauensee, 1945) - Central Peru (south of R Marañón, from San Martín south to Junín, also southern Cuzco).
