Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forest. From sea-level - 2,000 m.

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Systematic position of genus uncertain. Although traditionally included in present family, may be closer to Tyrannidae or Cotingidae. Forms a superspecies with Grey-headed Piprites (Piprites griseiceps).

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • perijana Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1949   -  Subtropical zone of Sierra de Perijá on northern Colombia-Venezuela border, and of eastern Andes in southern Táchira (Venezuela).
  • antioquiae Chapman, 1924   -  Northern Colombia at northern end of central Andes and in middle Magdalena Valley.
  • chlorion (Cabanis, 1847)   -  Northern, eastern and southern Venezuela (coastal mountains in Carabobo, Aragua and Sucre, also Amazonas and Bolí­var), the Guianas, eastern Colombia and lower Amazonian Brazil (eastern Amazonas east to Amapá).
  • tschudii (Cabanis, 1874)   -  Extreme eastern Colombia (south-eastern Guainí­a), extreme southern Venezuela (southern Amazonas), western and central Amazonian Brazil, eastern Ecuador and central and eastern Peru (south to Juní­n).
  • boliviana Chapman, 1924   -  South-western Amazonian Brazil and northern Bolivia.
  • grisescens Novaes, 1964   -  Eastern part of northern Brazil (eastern Pará and Maranhío).
  • chloris (Temminck, 1822)   -  Eastern Brazil (Espí­rito Santo, and from southern Mato Grosso do Sul east to Rio de Janeiro, south to northern Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
