Subspecies
Formerly considered a manakin and placed in the family Pipridae, but anatomical and other features typical of present family. Appears most closely related to a group that includes Myiophobus, Myiobius, Terenotriccus, Pyrrhomyias and Hirundinea. Validity of subspecies helenae questionable. Further research is required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cinnamomea (Lawrence, 1869) - Eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, eastern Colombia, southern Venezuela and western and central Amazonian Brazil.
helenae McConnell, 1911 - The Guianas and northern Brazil (Amapá).
