Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through deforestation for cattle ranching and soy production, facilitated by expansion of the road network, is the main threat.

Subspecies
Genus often merged with Pipra. Forms a superspecies with Cerulean-capped Manakin (Lepidothrix coeruleocapilla), which it replaces geographically. Subspecies leucopygia may be a separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
isidorei Sclater, 1852 - Eastern side of eastern Andes in Colombia (Boyacá, Meta, Cauca) and eastern Ecuador.
leucopygia (Hellmayr, 1903) - Northern Peru on eastern side of central Andes (San Martín, northern Huánuco).
