Habitat
Canopy of mainly coastal, lowland and foothill Atlantic forest, secondary and disturbed growth, forest under-planted with cocoa, and clearings with scattered trees. From sea-level - 900 m.

Estimated population is 10,000 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat destruction through clearance for agricultural and real-estate development is the main threat.

Subspecies
Genus has been suggested, on basis of morphological analysis, as possibly belonging to an assemblage containing Laniisoma and genera currently placed in Pipridae (Schiffornis) and Tyrannidae (Laniocera, Xenopsaris, Pachyramphus). Traditional placement within present family considered preferable, pending further study.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
leucopygia Salvin, 1885 - Coastal north-eastern Brazil in Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Bahia.
pipra (Lesson, 1831) - Coastal eastern Brazil in Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and Sío Paulo.
