Subspecies
Genus formerly included with Tityra in the Cotingidae, but transferred to present family because of several shared, derived features of the skull and syrinx. Because both genera exhibit similarity to cotingids in many other features, some authors prefer to leave them in that family or to treat them as representing a separate family (Tityridae). Phylogenetic affinity of present species unknown. Has been suggested that it is closely related to, and perhaps conspecific with, Slaty Becard (Pachyramphus spodiurus). The two appear to replace each other geographically and, arguably, constitute a zoogeographical species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • rufus (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Western Panama (both slopes of Canal area, lower and middle Bayano Valley, and Darién), Colombia (Magdalena and Guajira south to Valle de Cauca and northern Huila, also east of Andes in at least Norte de Santander and Leticia), western and northern Venezuela (eastern, generally north of R Orinoco, to Sucre, Monagas and northern and eastern Bolívar), the Guianas, and Brazil (middle and lower Amazonia from Manacapurú and Tefé east to Amapá, north-eastern Pará and Maranhío).
  • juruanus Gyldenstolpe, 1951   -  Eastern Peru (Loreto) and western Amazonian Brazil (south-western Amazonas).
