Subspecies
Genus formerly included with Tityra in the Cotingidae, but transferred to present family because of several shared, derived features of the skull and syrinx. Because both genera exhibit similarity to cotingids in many other features, some authors prefer to leave them in that family or to treat them as representing a separate family (Tityridae). Phylogenetic affinities of present species remain unknown. Subspecies exhibit rather marked variation in plumage and, in some cases, also in voice. It has been suggested that more than one species may be involved.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • similis Cherrie, 1891   -  Central Guatemala east to southern Belize (Toledo) and northern Honduras, south to northern Colombia (northern Chocó).
  • cinereiventris Sclater, PL, 1862   -  Northern Colombia (Chocó except extreme north, east to Santa Marta, south to upper R Sinú and César).
  • dorsalis Sclater, PL, 1862   -  Central and south-western Colombia (southern Antioquia and Cundinamarca south to south-western Nariño) and north-western Ecuador (eastern Esmeraldas, northern and western Imababura, and northern Pichincha south to Mindo area).
  • tristis (Kaup, 1852)   -  North-eastern Colombia (east of Andes from Norte de Santander south to Boyacá, probably to Guainía), Venezuela (except Cerro Duida, in southern Amazonas), Trinidad and Tobago, the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil (Roraima east to Maranhío and south-eastern Pará).
  • nigriventris Sclater, PL, 1857   -  Eastern Colombia (east of Andes in western Meta south to Vaupés), southern Venezuela (southern Amazonas at base of Cerro Duida), western Brazil (both banks of upper Amazon east to R Jamundá and eastern bank of R Madeira), eastern Peru (south of R Marañón) and northern Bolivia (Beni).
  • tenebrosus Zimmer, JT, 1936   -  South-eastern Colombia (south-eastern Nariño and western Caquetá east to Amazonas), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (northern and western Loreto and San Martín).
  • polychopterus (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Eastern Brazil (Piauí and Ceará south to Alagoas and Bahia).
  • spixii (Swainson, 1838)   -  North-western Bolivia (Pando and La Paz east to Santa Cruz and south to Tarija), southern and south-eastern Brazil (Mato Grosso east to Espírito Santo, south to Rio Grande do Sul), Paraguay, northern Argentina (south to Tucumán, Córdoba and northern Buenos Aires) and Uruguay.
