Subspecies
Affinities uncertain. May be closely related to Myiozetetes, given numerous similarities in nesting behaviour. Populations in Amazonia, including slightly larger birds of south-eastern Colombia and the Guianas, may be better represented as a single subspecies (nominate), owing to lack of clear distinctions and to the existence of gradual clines of increasing wing length northern and south of Amazon that are not correlated with any observed colour differences. Formal revision, including genetic survey, is necessary in order to determine the most appropriate taxonomic designations.

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • texanus van Rossem, 1940   -  Extreme southern USA (lower Rio Grande) and eastern Mexico (south to southern Veracruz).
  • derbianus (Kaup, 1852)   -  Western Mexico (Sonora south to Isthmus of Tehuántepec).
  • guatimalensis (Lafresnaye, 1852)   -  South-eastern Mexico (southern Veracruz, eastern Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, and Yucatán Peninsula), Guatemala, Belize and El Salvador south to central Panama.
  • rufipennis (Lafresnaye, 1851)   -  Northern Colombia (Caribbean coast and lower Magdalena Valley), northern and central Venezuela (east to western Sucre and Monagas, south to northern Amazonas and northern Bolívar).
  • caucensis Chapman, 1914   -  Western and southern Colombia (south-western Bolívar, R Cauca and upper R Magdalena).
  • trinitatis Hellmayr, 1906   -  Eastern Colombia (R Meta), southern and eastern Venezuela (Amazonas, and eastern Sucre south to Orinoco Delta and eastern Bolívar) and north-western Brazil (R Surumú and R Cotinga). Also Patos I and Trinidad.
  • sulphuratus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  The Guianas, northern Brazil (south to Amazon, east to Amapá and Marajó I), and east of Andes from south-eastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador south to south-eastern Peru.
  • maximiliani (Cabanis & Heine, 1860)   -  Eastern and southern Brazil (Maranhío and Piauí south to Mato Grosso, Goiás and Santa Catarina), northern Bolivia (Beni) and Paraguay.
  • bolivianus (Lafresnaye, 1852)   -  Eastern Bolivia (Cochabamba south to Tarija).
  • argentinus Todd, 1952   -  Argentina (south to eastern Mendoza, Córdoba and Río Negro), eastern Paraguay, extreme south-eastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay.
