Subspecies
Molecular data indicate possible close relationship with Phelpsia, but additional evidence required in order to test this hypothesis.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

panamensis (Bangs & Penard, TE, 1918) - Eastern Panama (eastern from Canal Zone) and Caribbean coast of Colombia (Atrato east to Santa Marta and lower R Magdalena).
lictor (Lichtenstein, 1823) - Venezuela and the Guianas south to eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru, Amazonian and eastern Brazil (east to Amap�, Maranh�o and western Piau��, south to Goi�s and northern Mato Grosso do Sul, and from Pernambuco south to Rio de Janeiro) and northern Bolivia (south to Cochabamba and northern Santa Cruz).
