Subspecies
Morphological and behavioural evidence suggests genus most closely related to Legatus and nesting behaviour links with Pitangus. Molecular data support clade consisting of present species and Rusty-margined Flycatcher (Myiozetetes cayanensis) as sister-group to one formed by Grey-capped Flycatcher (Myiozetetes granadensis) and Dusky-chested Flycatcher (Myiozetetes luteiventris). Present species may be better split: subspecies grandis, with restricted range, differs vocally from widespread nominate; northern subspecies primulus, hesperis and texensis may form a separate species.

Proposed subspecies connivens (Urubamba) and fiedleri (Ucayali) included in nominate.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • primulus van Rossem, 1930   -  Western Mexico (southern Sonora south to northern Sinaloa).
  • hesperis Phillips, AR, 1966   -  Western Mexico (central Sinaloa and southern Zacatecas east to south-western Puebla, southern at least to south-eastern Oaxaca).
  • texensis (Giraud Jr, 1841)   -  Eastern and southern Mexico (from south-western Tamaulipas south through Yucatán Peninsula), Belize, much of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica (except south-west).
  • columbianus Cabanis & Heine, 1860   -  South-western Costa Rica and Panama, northern coast of Colombia (southern from Caribbean lowlands through Magdalena Valley to Huila) and northern Venezuela (east to Sucre, south to to northern Amazonas and northern Bolívar).
  • grandis Lawrence, 1871   -  Western Ecuador (southern from western Esmeraldas) and extreme north-western Peru (lowlands east of Andes and Pacific slope in Tumbes).
  • similis (Spix, 1825)   -  Eastern Colombia east of eastern Andes (southern from Norte de Santander), south-eastern Venezuela (Amazonas, southern Bolívar), French Guiana, eastern Ecuador, eastern and central Peru, Amazonian Brazil (except most drainages of R Tocantins and R Xingu) and northern Boliva (south to Cochabamba and northern Santa Cruz).
  • pallidiventris Pinto, 1935   -  Eastern Brazil (eastern Pará east to Paraíba, south to northern Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay (western at least to Caaguazú) and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
