Subspecies
Placed by early authors in the family Cotingidae, with supposed close relationship to genera Laniocera and Lipaugus. However, well-supported anatomical evidence indicates that it is a tyrannid, having close affinities to Sirystes, Casiornis and Myiarchus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
frederici (Bangs & Penard, TE, 1918) - South-eastern Colombia (southern from Meta and Vaupés), eastern and southern Venezuela and the Guianas south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, Amazonian Brazil (south to Mato Grosso, northern Goiás and northern Maranhío) and northern Bolivia (south to La Paz, Cochabamba and northern Santa Cruz).
simplex (Lichtenstein, 1823) - Eastern Brazil, from Alagoas south to Minas Gerais and south-western Sío Paulo.
