Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 1,200 m, occasionally up to 1,800 m.

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Affinities uncertain. Probably belongs in subfamily Fluvicolinae, but further study is required.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

leuconota (Lafresnaye, 1842) - South-eastern Honduras and eastern Nicaragua south to western Colombia and western Ecuador.
fuscicapillus (Sclater, PL, 1862) - Eastern Andes of Colombia, northern Ecuador and extreme north-eastern Peru (mouth of R Curaray).
poecilonota (Cabanis, 1849) - South-eastern Venezuela (south of R Orinoco and in Amazonas) and the Guianas.
niveiceps Zimmer, JT, 1930 - South-eastern Ecuador, Peru (San Mart��n south to northern Puno) and northern Bolivia (south to Cochabamba).
colonus (Vieillot, 1818) - Central and eastern Brazil (from Maraj� I and southern Maranh�o south to southern Mato Grosso do Sul and northern Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
