Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland. From sea-level - 2,500 m.
Breeds in north-western and south-central Argentina (Catamarca, Tucumán and La Rioja, and from Neuquén, Río Negro and south-western Buenos Aires south to Santa Cruz; may also breed in intervening zone); winters northern as far as central Bolivia.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Formerly placed in Xolmis by some authors on grounds of shared behavioural traits and morphological similarities. This species appears to be somewhat intermediate between the two genera, thus supporting their possible merging. Further study is required.
