Habitat
Semi-arid, bushy country, favouring open areas with sparse vegetation and scattered rocks, particularly near old buildings and walls. From 2,400 - 3,100 m.

Subspecies
Subspecies poorly differentiated.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
andicola Sclater, PL, 1860 - Ecuador.
albicauda (Philippi & Landbeck, 1863) - Peru, western Bolivia, northern Chile and north-western Argentina.
pollens Sclater, PL, 1869 - Andes of Ecuador (north to Imbabura).
Similar Species
Black-billed Shrike-tyrant (Agriornis montanus) which is slightly smaller, with less conspicuous streaking on throat, and much thinner and less stout bill.
