Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest, high altitude grassland and shrubland. From 2,850 - 4,100 m, occasionally up to 4,300 m.

Subspecies
Was formerly sometimes placed in Myiotheretes or Xolmis. Most recent authors prefer retention of monotypic genus on basis of internal and external morphology. Subspecies poorly differentiated.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

orinomus Wetmore, 1946 - Northern and central Colombia (Santa Marta Mts and north-eastern Andes).
erythropygius (Sclater, 1853) - Southern Colombia (Nari�o) south to western and central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
