Subspecies
Relationships within genus unclear, pending completion of major genetic study. True taxonomic status of subspecies uncertain. Further research is required.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
superciliaris Lawrence, 1863 - Honduras south to northern and western Colombia (Caribbean lowlands, northern base of Andes to middle Magdalena Valley in western Santander, and Pacific lowlands) and north-western Ecuador (south to Manabí).
coronatus Sclater, 1858 - Southern Venezuela (Amazonas), south-eastern Colombia (southern from western Caquetá and north-eastern Amazonas) and eastern Ecuador southern to eastern Peru (southern Loreto, eastern Pasco), north-western and western Brazil (upper R Negro and, south of Amazon, east to R Xingu area and south to north-western Mato Grosso) and northern Bolivia (south to La Paz).
gumia (Bangs & Penard, TE, 1918) - South-eastern Venezuela (central and eastern Bolívar), the Guianas and adjacent northern Brazil (upper R Branco east to Amapá).
