Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland, montane and swamp forest. From sea-level - 1,650 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Subspecies
Relationships within genus unclear, pending completion of major genetic study. True taxonomic status of subspecies uncertain. Further research is required.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • superciliaris Lawrence, 1863   -  Honduras south to northern and western Colombia (Caribbean lowlands, northern base of Andes to middle Magdalena Valley in western Santander, and Pacific lowlands) and north-western Ecuador (south to Manabí­).
  • coronatus Sclater, 1858   -  Southern Venezuela (Amazonas), south-eastern Colombia (southern from western Caquetá and north-eastern Amazonas) and eastern Ecuador southern to eastern Peru (southern Loreto, eastern Pasco), north-western and western Brazil (upper R Negro and, south of Amazon, east to R Xingu area and south to north-western Mato Grosso) and northern Bolivia (south to La Paz).
  • gumia (Bangs & Penard, TE, 1918)   -  South-eastern Venezuela (central and eastern Bolí­var), the Guianas and adjacent northern Brazil (upper R Branco east to Amapá).
