Subspecies
Relationships within genus unclear, pending completion of major genetic study. Taxonomic limits of subspecies uncertain. Vocal differences reported between populations northern and south of Amazon. Further research is required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
saturatus Salvin & Godman, 1882 - Southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar), the Guianas, eastern Colombia (Vaupés, probably more widespread), northern Brazil (upper R Negro, and from northern Pará east to Amapá), and very locally north-eastern Ecuador (northern Sucumbíos) and north-eastern Peru (Loreto).
pallidiventris Novaes, 1968 - Brazil south of Amazon, from lower R Tapajós east to northern Maranhío, also locally in Mato Grosso (Alta Floresta) and eastern Rondônia.
