Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest and shrubland. From sea-level - 800 m, occasionally up to 2,000 m.

Subspecies
Closely related to, and sometimes placed in, genus Lophotriccus, despite lack of a distinctive crown pattern. Subspecies venezuelensis only marginally distinct from nominate, perhaps better subsumed in latter.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • wilcoxi Griscom, 1924   -  Western Panama (Chiriquí­ east to Canal Zone).
  • pilaris (Cabanis, 1847)   -  Northern Colombia (Bolí­var east to Guajira, south to Huila and Meta) and north-western Venezuela (Zulia, Táchira).
  • venezuelensis Ridgway, 1906   -  Northern Venezuela from Carabobo east to Sucre, and in llanos from western Apure east to Monagas.
  • griseiceps (Hellmayr, 1911)   -  Eastern Colombia, east-central Venezuela (northern Amazonas, northern Bolí­var, Delta Amacuro) and western Guyana.
