Subspecies
Genus was long known as Spizitornis. Formerly treated in monotypic genus Yanacea, but plumage and molecular evidence suggest close relationship with Yellow-billed Tit-Tyrant (Anairetes flavirostris).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
alpinus (Carriker, 1933) - Western Andean slope in northern Peru (Ancash, La Libertad).
bolivianus (Carriker, 1935) - South-eastern Peru (Cuzco, Apurímac) and north-western Bolivia (La Paz).
Similar Species
Other Anairetes spp. are heavily streaked below, but Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant (Uromyias agraphia) has a plain crest, pale eyebrow and brown upperparts.
