Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry shrubland. From sea-level - 2,400 m, occasionally up to 3,085 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Subspecies
Subspecies tumbezana recently treated as a separate species, presumably including inflava and maranonica, but definitive studies lacking. Described taxon ignobilis (from south-central Bolivia, north-western Argentina and Paraguay) indistinguishable from nominate in large series, and thus merged with latter.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • eremonoma Wetmore, 1953   -  Pacific lowlands of Panama.
  • incomta (Cabanis & Heine, 1860)   -  Colombia (northern and Andes) and northern Ecuador east to Venezuela (south to Apure, northern Amazonas and northern Bolí­var) and Trinidad (including Monos I).
  • tumbezana (Taczanowski, 1877)   -  Pacific lowlands of south-western Ecuador and north-western Peru (Tumbes, eastern Piura, north-eastern Lambayeque).
  • inflava Chapman, 1924   -  Arid north-western Peru from central Piura and central Lambayeque south to northern Lima.
  • maranonica J. T. Zimmer, 1941   -  Arid north-central Peru in Marañón Valley, western Amazonas, eastern Cajamarca and eastern La Libertad.
  • wagae (Taczanowski, 1884)   -  The Guianas, Amazonian Brazil, eastern Peru and northern Bolivia.
  • murina (Spix, 1825)   -  Central, eastern and southern Brazil (Maranhío, Ceará and Pernambuco south to Mato Grosso and Sío Paulo), central Bolivia (Cochabamba south to Tarija), Paraguay and north-western Argentina (south to La Rioja).
