Subspecies
Genus as presently constituted may be polyphyletic. Anatomical evidence suggests that present species may be closest to Planalto Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias fasciatus) and Sooty-headed Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias griseiceps) and that all perhaps unrelated to others of genus, some or all of which possibly better placed in resurrected genus Tyranniscus. Was for long placed in latter genus.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

flavimentum (Chapman, 1912) - Santa Marta Mts, in northern Colombia.
nigrocapillus (Lafresnaye, 1845) - Andes of extreme western Venezuela, Colombia (except Santa Marta), western and eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru (south to Jun��n).
aureus (Zimmer, JT, 1941) - Andes of western Venezuela (southern Lara south to northern T�chira).
