Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Maracaibo Tody-Flycatcher (Todirostrum viridanum).

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • virididorsale Parkes, 1976   -  South-central Veracruz (drainage of R Papaloapan) and adjacent northern Oaxaca, in southern Mexico.
  • finitimum Bangs, 1904   -  Southern Mexico (southern Veracruz) south to north-western Costa Rica.
  • wetmorei Parkes, 1976   -  Central and eastern Costa Rica and Panama.
  • cinereum (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Colombia (except south-west), Venezuela (except north-west), the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil.
  • sclateri (Cabanis & Heine, 1860)   -  South-western Colombia (south-western Cauca, Nariño), western Ecuador and north-western Peru (Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque).
  • peruanum Zimmer, JT, 1930   -  Eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru (Loreto south to Cuzco).
  • cearae Cory, 1916   -  Eastern Brazil (eastern Pará east to Ceará and Alagoas, south to northern Bahia).
  • coloreum Ridgway, 1906   -  Northern Bolivia, northern Paraguay, southern and south-eastern Brazil (southern Mato Grosso east to Espí­rito Santo and Sío Paulo) and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
