Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Smoky-fronted Tody-Flycatcher (Poecilotriccus fumifrons).

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • mituensis (Pelzeln, 1868)   -  Eastern Colombia (around Mitú, Vaupés).
  • caniceps (Chapman, 1924)   -  Southern Colombia (western Caquetá) east to north-western Brazil (east to Tefé) and south to eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru.
  • senectus (Griscom & Greenway, 1937)   -  Northern Brazil north of Amazon (north-eastern Amazonas east to north-western Pará).
  • latirostris (Pelzeln, 1868)   -  Central Amazonian Brazil from upper R Juruá and R Purús east to Parintins.
  • austroriparius (Todd, 1952)   -  Right bank of R Tapajós, in western Pará (Brazil).
  • mixtus (Zimmer, JT, 1940)   -  South-eastern Peru (from northern Puno) south to north-western Bolivia (La Paz, Beni, Cochabamba).
  • ochropterus (Allen, JA, 1889)   -  Southern Brazil (Mato Grosso south to northern Sío Paulo).
