Subspecies
Formerly treated in genus Euscarthmornis and later in Idioptilon, both now defunct. Previously considered conspecific with Pelzeln's Tody-tyrant (Hemitriccus inornatus). Recently described isolated subspecies chiribiquetensis demonstrates closer affinity to Andean forms than to nearby tepui populations. Subspecies septentrionalis perhaps indistinguishable, may be better merged with impiger.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
impiger (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1868) - North-central Colombia (Magdalena south to Santander) and northern Venezuela (northern and western Zulia east to Sucre and central Anzoátegui, including Margarita I).
septentrionalis (Chapman, 1914) - Central Colombia (upper Magdalena Valley southern from northern Tolima).
chiribiquetensis Stiles, 1995 - Sierra de Chiribiquete (Caquetá), in southern Colombia.
duidae (Chapman, 1929) - Cerro Duida (Amazonas), in southern Venezuela.
breweri (Phelps Jr, 1977) - South-western Bolívar (Massif of Jaua), in southern Venezuela.
auyantepui (Gilliard, 1941) - Tepuis of south-eastern Bolívar (south-eastern Venezuela).
rufipes (Tschudi, 1844) - Arid valleys of central and southern Peru (southern from Junín and Cuzco) south to north-western Bolivia (La Paz, southern Beni).
margaritaceiventer (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Eastern and south-eastern Bolivia, east-central and southern Brazil (Mato Grosso and Goiás south to western Minas Gerais and Sío Paulo), Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (south to Córdoba and Entre Ríos).
