Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Hazel-fronted Pygmy-tyrant (Pseudotriccus simplex), and possibly conspecific. Subspecies berlepschi and annectens intergrade on west-central Colombian slopes.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

berlepschi Nelson, 1913 - Eastern Panama and north-western Colombia (east to western Caldas).
annectens (Salvadori & Festa, 1899) - South-western Colombia and north-western Ecuador.
pelzelni Taczanowski & Berlepsch, 1885 - Eastern Andes of Colombia and eastern Ecuador.
peruvianus Bond, J, 1947 - Locally in eastern Andes of Peru (San Mart��n south to Cuzco).
