Habitat
Primary riverine forest and lowland dipterocarp to upper montane forest. From lowlands to 1,800 m.

Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore (E), Thailand, Vietnam.

Habits
Gregarious and noisy.

Food
Large insects and small invertebrates.

Voice
A penetrating, harsh 'kweer kweer kweer kweer...' with a screaming quality. Also a series of rapid, squeaky 'pwi pwi pwi pwi...' notes interspersed with similar notes uttered at a slower pace, somewhat like a childs squeeze-toy.

Nest
Large, ball-shaped, composed of moss, leaves, twigs and other plant material, slung from hanging vegetation in the middle storey, often in open places.

Subspecies
Individual variation considerable. Several described subspecies considered probably untenable: morator (from southern Thailand), ardescens (south-eastern Thailand) and khmerensis (Cambodia and southern Indochina) regarded as inseparable from laoensis, and pallescens (Thai-Malay Peninsula) better treated as synonymous with sumatranus; orientalis possibly indistinguishable from brunnescens.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • laoensis Meyer de Schauensee, 1929   -  Southern Myanmar, Thailand (except extreme south) and Indochina.
  • sumatranus (Raffles, 1822)   -  Extreme southern Thailand south to Sumatra.
  • brunnescens Hartert, 1916   -  Northern Natuna Is and north-western Borneo (Sarawak).
  • orientalis Mayr, 1938   -  Borneo (except north-west).
