Habitat
Broadleaved evergreen forest. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam (NB), China (mainland) (B) (P), Japan (B), Malaysia (NB), North Korea (P), South Korea (B) (P), Taiwan (China) (B) (P), Vietnam (P).

Vagrant to Hong Kong (China) (P), Indonesia (NB).

North-eastern Asia in Japan, South Korea, mainland China and Taiwan. Wintering mainly on the island of Borneo in eastern Malaysia, Brunei and Kalimantan in Indonesia.

Status VU
Lowland deforestation in its breeding range is the main threat.

Breeding Season (Guide)
Does not breed in Australia. Breeds north-east Asia in Japan, South Korea, mainland China and Taiwan.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura), Blue-winged Pitta (Pitta moluccensis) and Mangrove Pitta (Pitta megarhyncha). Sometimes considered conspecific with Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Blue-winged Pitta (Pitta moluccensis) which is larger, lacks the buff supercillium and chestnut crown-stripe, has darker underparts and darker green upperparts and has larger white wing-patches, and Mangrove Pitta (Pitta megarhyncha) which has a larger bill and different head pattern as well as voice.
