Subspecies
Has on occasion been placed in a separate genus, Hydrornis, along with Blue-naped Pitta (Hydrornis nipalensis) and Blue-rumped Pitta (Hydrornis soror). These three are closely related. Racial identity of birds in southern Vietnam (southern Annam) uncertain and tentatively placed with bolovenensis.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
oatesi (Hume, 1873) - Northern, eastern and south-eastern Myanmar east to north-eastern Laos and south to west, southern and north-eastern Thailand.
castaneiceps (Delacour & Jabouille, 1930) - Southern China (southern Yunnan), north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin, northern Annam) and central Laos.
bolovenensis (Delacour, 1932) - Southern Laos and southern Annam.
deborah (King, BF, 1978) - Central Peninsular Malaysia.
