Food
Mainly planktonic crustaceans, small fish and squid. Feeds on the wing or by surface-seizing.

Voice
Generally silent at sea. At colonies gives a soft twittering, chirping and highly rasping 'skveeee skew skwe'.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

furcata (Gmelin, 1789) - Northern Kuril, Commander and Aleutian Is.
plumbea (Peale, 1849) - Western coast of northern America, from Alaska south to northern California.
