Marine, pelagic. Breeds on remote islands. Occasionally visits harbors after storms.

Canada (B), Japan, Russia (Asian), United States Minor Outlying Islands, USA (B).

Food
Mainly planktonic crustaceans, small fish and squid. Feeds on the wing or by surface-seizing.

Voice
Generally silent at sea. At colonies gives a soft twittering, chirping and highly rasping 'skveeee skew skwe'.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • furcata (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Northern Kuril, Commander and Aleutian Is.
  • plumbea (Peale, 1849)   -  Western coast of northern America, from Alaska south to northern California.
