Breeds on islands and sea cliffs, otherwise marine, pelagic.

Vagrant to Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Côte dIvoire, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Ghana, Guinea, Israel, Lebanon, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Poland, Russia (European), Sierra Leone, Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine.

Unknown to Sâo Tomé e Principe.

North-eastern Atlantic, from southern Iceland and western Norway south through northern and western Britain to north-western France, northern Spain, Salvage and Canary Is; also in Mediterranean, from eastern Spain east to Greece and (?) Turkey.

Estimated population is 1,300,000 - 1,500,000 (2010).

Food
Small fish, squid, crustaceans and offal.

Voice
Whickering call in the dark at breeding gounds. A continuous purring.

Nest
In a crevice or at the end of a burrow.

Eggs (Guide)
1; white with faint brown spots. Incubation: about 44 days; by both sexes.

Subspecies
Mediterranean population might form distinct subspecies (melitensis).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • pelagicus (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean; ranges to Indian Ocean.
  • melitensis (Schembri, 1843)   -  Breeds Mediterranean; winter range unknown, possibly to Indian Ocean.
