A confirmed sighting off Southport, Qld, January 19, 2013.

Habitat
Pelagic.

Range (Guide)
Chile (B), Fiji (B), French Polynesia (B), Kiribati (B), New Caledonia (E) (B), Vanuatu (E) (B).

Unknown to American Samoa (B), Cook Islands, Niue, Pitcairn Islands, Samoa (B), Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, United States Minor Outlying Islands, Wallis and Futuna Islands.

Kiribati, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Chile. Possible also Vanuatu, Samoa and Fiji.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2013) and decreasing.

Status EN
Declining possibly due to predation by rats and cats, and of eggs and small chicks by mice. Human exploitation and increasing cultivation of islets are additional threats.

Small fish, cephalopods and crustaceans.

Silent at sea.

Nest
In burrows in sand and also under vegetation or in rock crevices. In loose colonies.

Subspecies
Polymorphism has led to description of several bogus subspecies.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Dark morph similar to but larger than Tristram's Storm-Petrel (Hydrobates tristrami).
