Rare vagrant to southern Australian waters. Recorded off south-western WA and western Vic (Feb 2005).

Habitat
Marine, pelagic.

Range (Guide)
Argentina (NB), Atlantic (Antarctic) (NB), Brazil (NB), Falkland Islands (Malvinas) (NB), Namibia (NB), South Africa (NB), Southeast Atlantic (B) (NB), Southwest Atlantic (NB), St Helena (B), Uruguay (NB).

Vagrant to Antarctica, Israel, Jordan, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Southern Atlantic, breeding at Tristan da Cunha and Gough I.

Breeds on Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island, common in southern Atlantic Ocean mainly between 20° and 50° S, sporadic in Indian Ocean. Rare vagrant to southern Australian waters.

Does not breed in Australia. Breeds on Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island (March - September).

Subspecies
Has been considered sibling species of White-headed Petrel (Pterodroma lessonii).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Tahiti Petrel (Pseudobulweria rostrata) which has some white in the wings and pale silvery underwing coverts.
