Habitat
Marine, pelagic, in sub-tropical and tropical waters of the South Pacific, dispersing to the central North Pacific.

Australia (B), Chile, French Polynesia, Marshall Islands (NB), Mexico, Micronesia [Federated States of] (NB), New Zealand (B), Norfolk Island, Pitcairn Islands (B), Southwest Atlantic (B).

Vagrant to Japan, USA.

Probably January - July on Lord Howe Island.

Nest
A depression on the ground, sparsely lined with twigs and leaves.

Eggs (Guide)
1; white; rounded-oval; about 64 x 46 mm. Incubation: 51 days; by both sexes.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 45 days.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • neglecta (Schlegel, 1863)   -  Breeds subtropical South Pacific including Lord Howe Island, Kermadec Island and the Australian Pitcairn Group.
  • juana Mathews, 1936   -  Breeds on Juan Fernandez, San Ambrosia and San Felix islands.


Similar Species
Herald Petrel (Pterodroma heraldica) which always has a darker head and face, pale morph with White-headed Petrel (Pterodroma lessonii) which has a conspicuous subortial patch, paler upperwings and back, whitish tail and darker underwings, intermediate morph with Phoenix Petrel (Pterodroma alba) which has a mainly dark underwing lacking the large white patches on the primaries and has white under tail-coverts Magenta Petrel (Pterodroma magentae) which has all-dark underwing, white under tail-coverts and a longer wedge-shaped tail, dark morph with Providence Petrel (Pterodroma solandri) which is grey and has dark primary shafts and Great-winged Petrel (Pterodroma macroptera) and Murphy's Petrel (Pterodroma ultima) (Pterodroma ultima) which have wholly dark underwings.
